Test Kits for the Accurate Detection of Histamine
Histamine is an organic nitrogenous compound which naturally occurs in the human body, where it acts as neurotransmitter and is involved in immune responses and the regulation of physiological functions.
In an allergic reaction, the immune system releases a high level of histamine, leading to inflammatory reactions which are responsible for typical allergic symptoms. Those who are intolerant to histamine will suffer from similar reactions from an oral intake of histamine.
Histamine as indicator for bacterial growth
Histamine is produced by the decomposition of histidine caused by the growth of certain bacteria in fish and some other food products. Fish meal produced from materials which have been allowed to degrade prior to being processed may contain high levels of histamine and can thus be toxic.
Fish containing high levels of histamine has been associated with many examples of poisoning commonly referred to as “scombroid poisoning,” a major health problem for consumers. Quality control measures designed to minimize the occurrence of scombrotoxic fish require the determination of histamine levels in the range of approximately 10 to 200 ppm.
Fast and highly sensitive histamine analysis
The Romer Labs test kit portfolio covers 2 highly sensitive ELISA methods for the quantitative analysis of histamine in different food matrices.

AgraQuant®
ELISA Tests
AgraQuant® Histamine test kits are accurate and reliable enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) in a quantitative format. These test kits have been validated for the analysis of histamine in fresh fish, fish meal, cheese, sausage, milk, wine and champagne.
The AgraQuant® Histamine Rapid test kits are specifically developed for the detection of histamine in fresh, canned and salted fish, as well as in fish meal and fish in oil. The workflow of these test kit has been optimized for fish samples and allows for a much faster assay procedure.
Both AgraQuant® Histamine test kits are competitive ELISAs in a ready-to-use format to reduce handling errors and come with a set of 8 standards, a histamine coated plate, an acylation reagent, an acylation buffer, a wash buffer, a histamine antiserum conjugate, a substrate and a stop solution.
Results are measured with a specific ELISA reader, such as the StatFax® or the BioTek® reader.
