Macadamia Nut Test Kits for Lab and On-Site Detection
Macadamia is a genus of trees indigenous to Australia, which is well known for its edible fruit, the macadamia nut. The seed, which is covered by a very hard shell, is frequently used as an ingredient in baked goods, confectioneries and breakfast cereals or consumed on its own.
Although the prevalence compared to other tree nuts is rather low, macadamia nuts can elicit severe allergic responses, especially in children. Hidden traces of macadamia nuts in food represent a critical problem for allergic individuals. The food industry is required to use sensitive macadamia nut detection methods to protect consumers from the consequences of potential cross contaminations.
Mandatory labeling of tree nuts in food
Tree nuts are considered one of the most frequent causes of food allergy, with macadamia nut allergy being among them. In Europe and the United States, the frequency of tree nut allergy as a whole is estimated to range between 0.2% and 0.5% both in children and adults. The only treatment for such an allergy is a strict and lifelong avoidance of macadamia nuts.
In order to protect consumers from the potentially fatal consequences of macadamia nut intake, allergen labeling is required by law in many countries. Macadamia nuts, along with other tree nuts, are regulated for example in the EU (
Regulation No 1169/201) and the U.S. (FDA – FALCPA 2004).

The AgraStrip® Macadamia test kit is a ready-to-use lateral flow device (LFD) for on-site testing. This immunological test allows a rapid analysis of a wide range of food samples within only 11 minutes (including extraction).
AgraStrip® LFDs represent a fast and simple qualitative strip test method in which specific antibodies labeled with colloidal gold are used for visual color development at a test and control zone.
The test kit comes complete with strips, antibody coated incubation vials, extraction tubes, an extraction buffer, surface swabs and additional accessories.

AgraQuant®
ELISA Tests
The AgraQuant® Plus Macadamia test kit is an accurate and reliable enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) specifically designed for a more efficient workflow. This quantitative test format uses unique extraction capsules that speed up the extraction of allergenic proteins, especially from processed matrices, to barely 1 minute.
Incubation times of the assay are reduced to 3 x 10 minutes, leading to a total assay time of 30 minutes for up to 38 samples.
AgraQuant® allergen test kits are sandwich ELISAs in a ready-to-use format to reduce handling errors and come with a set of 5 standards, an antibody coated plate, extraction capsules, a wash buffer, a conjugate, a substrate and a stop solution.
