Pistachio Test Kits for Lab and On-Site Detection

The pistachio plant is a small tree that produces seeds within hard shells. These seeds are widely consumed as food. Pistachio kernels are often eaten raw or roasted, but they are also frequently used in ice cream, confections, baked goods or salads.

Pistachios consist of about 20% of proteins, of which many of the individual proteins are known to cause allergic reactions. The symptoms are very diverse and range from itchiness, swellings and skin rushes to severe gastrointestinal or cardiovascular problems, which may even lead to a life-threatening anaphylactic shock.

Allergic individuals must strictly avoid the consumption of pistachios or pistachio-containing food. Cross-contaminations during production processes can often not be excluded, so sensitive pistachio detection methods are required.

Mandatory labeling of tree nuts in food

Tree nuts are considered one of the most frequent causes of food allergy, with pistachio allergy being among them. Allergic reactions to pistachio usually develop during the early stages of life and often persist for the lifetime.

The only treatment of a pistachio allergy is a strict and lifelong avoidance of pistachios. In order to protect consumers from the potentially fatal consequences of pistachio consumption, allergen labeling is required by law in many countries. Pistachios, along with other tree nuts, are regulated for example in the EU (Opens external link in new windowRegulation (EU) No 1169/201) and the U.S. (Opens external link in new windowFDA – FALCPA 2004).

Fast and highly sensitive pistachio analysis

The Romer Labs pistachio test kit portfolio covers ELISAs and LFDs for the quantitative and qualitative analysis of pistachio in environmental samples, rinse waters and finished food products.

AgraStrip

AgraStrip®

Lateral Flow Devices

The AgraStrip® Cashew/Pistachio test kit is a ready-to-use lateral flow device (LFD) for on-site testing. This immunological test allows a rapid analysis of a wide range of food samples within only 11 minutes (including extraction).

AgraStrip® LFDs represent a fast and simple qualitative strip test method in which specific antibodies labeled with colloidal gold are used for visual color development at a test and control zone.

The test kit comes complete with strips, antibody coated incubation vials, extraction tubes, an extraction buffer, surface swabs and additional accessories.

ELISA Tests

The AgraQuant® Pistachio test kit is an accurate and reliable enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in a quantitative format. Results are measured with a specific ELISA reader, such as the StatFax® or the BioTek® reader.

The AgraQuant® Plus Pistachio test kit is specifically designed for a more efficient workflow. This test format uses unique extraction capsules that speed up the extraction of allergenic proteins, especially from processed matrices, to barely 1 minute.
Incubation times of the assay are reduced to 3 x 10 minutes, leading to a total assay time of 30 minutes for up to 38 samples.

Both AgraQuant® Pistachio test kits are sandwich ELISAs in a ready-to-use format to reduce handling errors and come with a set of 5 standards, extraction solution /capsules, an antibody coated plate, a wash buffer, a conjugate, a substrate and a stop solution.
