Cashew Test Kits for Lab and On-Site Detection

The cashew tree, belonging to the plant family Anacardiaceae, grows in the tropical climate and produces cashew apples and cashew seeds.
The cashew seed, which is mostly just referred to as cashew, is widely consumed either on its own, raw or roasted, or used in a variety of recipes.

With about 18%, the fraction of proteins in cashew seeds is very high and many of them are heat-stable and can still elicit an allergic response after production processes.

Allergic people must strictly avoid the intake of cashew. Especially hidden traces of cashew in food represent a critical problem.

Mandatory labeling of tree nuts in food

Tree nuts are considered as one of the most frequent causes of food allergy, with cashew allergy being among them. Allergic reactions to cashew can develop at any age and the prevalence of the allergy is about equal in children and adults.

The only treatment of a cashew allergy is a strict and lifelong avoidance of cashews. In order to protect consumers from the potentially fatal consequences of cashew consumption, allergen labelling is required by law in many countries. Cashews, along with other tree nuts, are regulated for example in the EU Opens external link in new window(Regulation No. 1169/201) and the U.S. (Opens external link in new windowFDA – FALCPA 2004).

Fast and highly sensitive cashew analysis

The Romer Labs cashew test kit portfolio covers ELISAs and LFDs for the quantitative and qualitative analysis of cashew in environmental samples, rinse waters and finished food products.

Lateral Flow Devices

The AgraStrip® Cashew/Pistachio test kit is a ready-to-use lateral flow device (LFD) for on-site testing. This immunological test allows a rapid analysis of a wide range of food samples within only 11 minutes (including extraction).

AgraStrip® LFDs represent a fast and simple qualitative strip test method in which specific antibodies labeled with colloidal gold are used for visual color development at a test and control zone.

The test kits comes complete with strips, antibody coated incubation vials, extraction tubes, an extraction buffer, surface swabs and additional accessories.

The AgraQuant® Cashew test kit is an accurate and reliable enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in a quantitative format. Results are measured with a specific ELISA reader, such as the StatFax® or the BioTek® reader.

The AgraQuant® Plus Cashew test kit is specifically designed for a more efficient workflow. This test format uses unique extraction capsules that speed up the extraction of allergenic proteins, especially from processed matrices, to barely 1 minute.
Incubation times of the assay are reduced to 3 x 10 minutes, leading to a total assay time of 30 minutes for up to 38 samples.

Both AgraQuant® Cashew test kits are sandwich ELISAs in a ready-to-use format to reduce handling errors and come with a set of 5 standards, extraction solution /capsules, an antibody coated plate, a wash buffer, a conjugate, a substrate and a stop solution.
